[Verse 1]
The birds in the birches
Do sing merrily
Whistling together
A sweet melody
They ask not for riches
Nor silk finery
Ever-contently
Perched up in their tree

[Verse 2]
I sit inside my home so still
Elbows on the window-sill
Wond'ring at that far-off place
Beyond the window pane
The window it sits ajar
And I can hear the birds afar
And wherever my heart has gone
It goes at once to Thee

[Chorus]
You're soaring over smoke
I'll fly with you as I sleep
And I'll never choke
I'll see through the blinding screen
[1] I would love to see the world
The way you see it for a day
And watch, with every wingbeat, how
Our worries melt away
[2] I would love to meet the one
Who moulded you like clay
Every time we hear your song
Our troubles fade away

[Bridge]
Our fingertips have brought the walls to rubble
But the birds will sing another day
If we only heard what we deserved
We would never hear those birds again
