When Farmer Tom had weary grown
His spirit sought its way t'ward home
Long he walked by bubbling stream
Lost in thought and hazy dream

Honest work he did by day
Tilling fields and baling hay
Under sun he'd ne'er dismay
Though oft' his toil was much

The sheep which dwelt in fields of green
Were glad when Farmer Tom was seen
For Tom had always joyful song
With pleasing rhyme and playful theme

Soaring sparrow, leaping trout
Songs of life were in his mouth
Hands were strong and belly stout
The harvest e'er was good

As sun came down on final day
Farmer Tom had naught to say
Those he loved had passed away
And long he felt their pull

The emerald hills and ruby sky
Seemed paler then through jaded eye
And to his home he said goodbye
Lingering at his door

Long ascending pearly stairs
Casting down his earthly cares
Just as creatures in their pairs
Found refuge from the rain

Never had old Tom sought after
Any form of fame
Yet all the creatures fondly
did recall the farmer's name
